Storage Conditions
The lyophilized BMP-4 recombinant protein is stable for at least 2 years from date of receipt at -20˚ C. Reconstituted BMP-4 is stable for at least 3 months when stored in working aliquots with a carrier protein at -20˚ C. As with any protein, exposing BMP-4 recombinant protein to repeated freeze / thaw cycles is not recommended. When working with proteins care should be taken to keep recombinant protein at a cool and stable temperature.
Biological Activity
Biological activity was determined by its ability to induce alkaline phosphatase production by ATDC-5 cells. The expected ED50 for this effect is 2-8 ng/ml.
Background
Bone morphogenetic proteins (BMPs) constitute a subfamily within the TGF-β superfamily of structurally related signaling proteins. Members of this superfamily are widely distributed throughout the body and are involved in diverse physiological processes during both pre- and postnatal life. Like BMP-7, BMP-4 is involved in the development and maintenance of bone and cartilage. Reduced expression of BMP-4 is associated with a number of bone diseases, including the heritable disorder Fibrodysplasia Ossificans Progressiva. Recombinant human BMP-4, expressed in HeLa cells, is a 31-36 kDa homodimeric glycoprotein.
