Biochemical Notes	Calcitonin is produced in humans by the parafollicular cells of the thyroid, and in many other animals in the ultimobranchial body. Its action is to reduce blood calcium (Ca2+), opposing the effects of parathyroid hormone (PTH). Calcitonin gene related peptide (CGRP) has been shown to be a potent vasodilator. Ref: Nature. 1985; 313, 54 - 56.
