Bioactivity
beta-Alanine is an amino acid formed by the degradation of carnosine and dihydrouracil in vivo. Since neuronal uptake and neuronal receptor sensitivity to beta-alanine have been demonstrated, the compound perhaps is a false transmitter for substituting gamma-AMINOBUTYRIC ACID. It is related to a rare genetic disorder, hyper-beta-alaninemia.
