Description
Sodium carboxyl methyl starch is a modified starch that is used as an excipient in many pharmaceutical products. It has been shown to reduce the rate of drug absorption by slowing down gastric emptying and increasing the viscosity of the gastrointestinal tract. Sodium carboxyl methyl starch has been used to control the release of paliperidone, a drug used for the treatment of schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. This agent is not known to be toxic to humans or animals, with no adverse effects observed following oral administration. The use of sodium carboxyl methyl starch in wastewater treatment has been investigated as a way to remove anions such as phosphate and nitrate from water.
