Hepatitis B Virus Surface Antigen
Product Overview
Recombinant, Hepatitis B surface antigen, contains full-length HBsAg (226 amino acids, molecular weight of 25.5 kDa), was, expressed in Pichia pastoris, and puried in vitro using Metal affinity, chromatography techniques.
Background - Introduction
Hepatitis, B Virus (HBV) infection induces a disease state which manifests itself in a, variety of ways, characterized by the extent of liver damage, inflammation, and viral persistence. HBV infection is also associated with a 100 fold, increased risk of hepatocellular carcinoma and currently infects over 250, million people worldwide. HBV has a partially double stranded 3.2 kilobase, DNA genome which contains four open reading frames. One of these encodes a, 154 amino acid protein called the HBx protein. HBx has been shown to be a, transcriptional transactivator of both viral and cellular promoters. Lacking, a DNA binding domain and nuclear localization signal, HBx is believed to, exert transcriptional activity through protein protein interaction.

Antigen Description
HBsAg is the surface, antigen of the Hepatitis-B-Virus (HBV). It indicates current Hepatitis B, infection. The capsid of a virus has different surface proteins from the rest of the, virus which act as antigens. These antigens are recognized by antibody, proteins that bind specifically to one of these surface proteins. Today, these antigen-proteins can be a genetically manufactured (e.g. transgene E. coli) to produce material for a simple antigen test, which detects the, presence of HBV. It is present in the sera of patients with viral hepatitis B, (with or without clinical symptoms). Patients who developed antibodies, against HBsAg (anti-HBsAg seroconversion) are usually considered, non-infectious. HBsAg detection by immunoassay is used in blood screening, to, establish a diagnosis of hepatitis B infection in the clinical setting (in, combination with other disease markers) and to monitor antiviral treatment.
